დაიბადა რაინბეკში, ნიუ-იორკი, ხალხურ მომღერალთა ლუდონ უეინრაიტისა და კეიტ მაკგერიგლის ოჯახში. პიანინოზე დაკვრას ექვსი წლის ასაკიდან სწავლობს. 14 წლის ასაკში კინოფილმში "Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller" შესრულებული საკუთარი სიმღერისთვის "I'm A-Runnin" მას 1989 წლის Genie Award-ის ნომინაცია მოუტანა საუკეთესო ორიგინალური სიმღერისთვის. 1990 წელს მოხვდა Juno Award-ის წლის ყველაზე პერსპექტიული მამაკაცი ვოკალისტის ნომინაციაში.
ბავშვობის დიდი ნაწილი დედასთან ერთად მონრეალში გაატარა. გარკვეული პერიოდი კონკორდიასა და მაკგილის უნივერსიტეტებში სწავლობდა კლასიკურ და თანამედროვე ფორტეპიანოს სპეციალობით. უეინრაიტი დღემდე კანადის მოქალაქეა.
