სტამბოლის უნივერსიტეტი ერთ-ერთი უძველესი უნივერსიტეტია ევროპაში (დაფუძნდა 1453 წელს) და უძველესი თურქეთში. 1933 წელს მოდერნიზებული იქნა ქემალ ათათურქის მიერ.
უნივერსიტეტს ამჟამად 16 ფაკულტეტი აქვს ხუთ კამპუსზე, რომლის მთავარი კამპუსი სტამბოლშია. აქ 2 000 პროფესორი და ასოცირებული მასწავლებელი, 4 000 ასისტენტი და უმცროსი მასწავლებელი, და 60 000 საბაკალავრო და 8 000 სამაგისტრო და სადოქტორო სტუდენტია.
უნივერსიტეტის კურსდამთავრებულები წარმოადგენენ ძირითად წყაროს თურქეთის საუნივერსიტეტო სისტემისთვის, ისევე როგორც თურქეთის ბიუროკრატიის, პროფესიული და სამეწარმეო სფეროებისთვის.
